Female Wage and Labor Differentials in Canada: History, Difference in Labor Markets, The Wage Gap, General Discrimination and Trends
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 12 page paper discussing wage and labor differentials for women in Canada. Within Canada today, women in the labor force generally make 70 to 80 cents for every dollar men make. This “wage gap” has actually decreased greatly over the years but still has a long way to go for total equity in the work place despite positive legislation in the 1970s and 1980s. Historically, women within Canada have been “crowded” into certain female-dominated professions such as clerical positions, nursing, teaching, domestic work, social work and sales and services. While clerical work once was comparable with male blue-collar jobs in regards to pay, the increase in unionization in many blue-collar trades left most of the female-dominated positions as those which were lower paid. As women shifted away from clerical positions and proceeded to attain degrees in higher education, the wage gap began to decrease but then women encountered the “glass ceiling” in which women held a disproportionate number of positions in the lowest quartile in large corporations. Today, women still have lower average salaries than men despite the gain in higher education. One of the reasons found within studies by Statistics Canada and others is that women who choose to have and raise children lose experience during their absence; experience men continue to gain which in turn leads to more promotions. Another reason believed for the continue wage gap is discrimination which still exists within employers, co-workers and the general population somewhat who still categorize some professions as “female” (such as teaching) and some as “male” (such as the trades) and in essence this restricts female workers from opportunities within the blue collar and higher executive markets.

Feminism and Gender Roles in the 1950s and 1960s
[ send me this essay ]
A 12 page overview of the societal changes which occurred during these two decades in regard to the relationships between men and women. Notes a number of factors combined to effect these changes. These were inclusive of the subservient role of women throughout history, inequalities in the workplace, and the perception of being bound into domesticity. Concludes that to judge the changes in gender roles which occurred during the 1960s is the same as judging any facet of human evolution. The relationship between men and women is no more static than any other aspect of our culture and society. Women had witnessed the breaking down of racial discrimination, and age-old attitudes about sexuality and other barriers, they were ready to implement equal changes in their own lives. [ send me this essay ]
4 pages in length. The extent to which feminism and postmodernism/postculturalism have an impact upon nursing scholars who are interested in industry power relations is both grand and far-reaching. That the entire nursing field has developed through the years into a critical component of overall health care speaks to the nature of strength, power, insight and tenacity inherent to the female spirit; in order for nursing scholars to combat the ever-present aspect of male-oriented power relations, it is important for the tenets of feminism and postmodernism/postculturalism to lead the way. Contends that feminists do not deny the biological facts of their bodies, only society’s tendency to lump them into certain societal categories because of their bodies. With the advent of the societal movement we now refer to as feminism, there were dramatic changes in gender roles, the societal expectations for women as opposed to men. Feminism: Ecological Theory
[ send me this essay ]
5 pages in length. Women have been under patriarchal control since the beginning of time; when compared to man's domination over nature is there a tangible correlation between the way in which the male gender reigns over both entities. This concept, known as the ecofeminist theory, speaks to the fact that women and nature are on parallel paths with regard to patriarch oppression, clearly illustrating the extent to which patriarchal control transcends virtually all boundaries.
