Theodore Dreiser's "Sister Carrie" - Class And Masculinity
[ send me this essay ]
5 pages in length. Expectations of gender and class structure have long carved out predetermined paths for those within global communities, not the least of which includes assigned roles of masculinity/femininity and hierarchy of social status that serves to stratifying social structure in such a way that reflects a definitive separation of economic, political, societal and gender position. Theodore Dreiser had an eye-catching way to blur those otherwise rigid boundaries within the context of his literary works, setting many a Victorian-era reader on edge with strong, independent female protagonists and weak-willed, passive males who defied such stringency. Carrie, Drouet and Hurstwood represent this switch of social and gender standards in Dreiser's Sister Carrie as they continuously struggle with their own meager lots in life while at the same time strive to find solace in their own inadequacies. Three Authors' Use of Independence
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page paper examining how three women authors approach female independence. Kate Chopin, Zora Neale Hurston and Anzia Yezierska all addressed the issue of female independence in the works considered here. Chopin's The Awakening, Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God and Yezierska's Bread Givers: A Struggle between a Father of the Old World and a Daughter of the New World all feature female characters struggling to break the mold of tradition, the one that keeps them trapped in lives they have not chosen for themselves. All of these characters understand that they have little or no true freedom, and each sets about discovering independence from the forces that would keep them enslaved. Each approaches her quest very differently, however, and each experiences varying degrees of success in her mission. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Three Women of Color in the West
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page paper examining the statement, “Scholars have suggested the West afforded greater educational and employment opportunities for women of color.” It can be argued that this is true, but only in relative terms. The West did – and does – offer more opportunities for women of color in many ways relative to those opportunities available in much of the Eastern Hemisphere. The reasons, however, likely have more to do with more developed economies in the West and more opportunity being available in general. The experiences of Era Bell Thompson, Fabiola Cabeza and the fictional Lalu Nathoy illustrate the point. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
