Dow Corning's Breast Implants
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page report on the debate surrounding the use of silicone gel breast implants. Ralph Nader involved himself in the controversy in 1988. Since then, various groups have come forward with comments: consumer groups in favor of the implants, consumer groups in opposition to the implants, attorneys, insurance companies, plastic surgeons, and even Congress. That there have been problems with the implants is a point that no one contests. The issue at the core of the debate is whether silicone migrating to other areas of the body truly is, as was originally thought, biologically inert, or whether it contributes to some hidden reaction. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Early Detection of Breast Cancer
[ send me this essay ]
This 6 page report discusses
breast cancer and an early intervention and public awareness
campaign. Knowledge, as in most cases, is a powerful weapon.
Knowledge, is the primary motivating factor for breast
self-examination (BSE). Women must know if changes occur in
their breasts and what those changes could mean. Also discussed
is the appropriate channel of communication to be used to make
the greatest impact for the targeted audience. Determining which
will work best for encouraging women to practice BSE and other
forms of early breast cancer detection, as well as for any other
public health message, requires an understanding of the most
basic characteristics of which channel of communication can be
the most effective for this message. Bibliography lists 8
sources.

Early Feminism/Woolf & Wollstonecraft
[ send me this essay ]
A 7 page essay/research paper that contrasts and compares the early feminism of Mary Wollstonecraft, who penned A Vindication of the Rights of Women in 1792, and Virginia Woolf who wrote A Room of One's Own in 1928. While different in context and writing style, these two writers made many of the same points, as they endeavored to write in such a manner as to break through stereotyped notions of gender and make their readers realize that society and history's norm--in regards to women--was unjust and unethical. Examination of these two texts, with particular emphasis on the chapter in Wollstonecraft's text entitled "On National Education," shows that where the authors differed, besides differing context due to having been written in different eras, was in regards to their intended reading audience in each case. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Eating Disorders: Female Verses Male Victims
[ send me this essay ]
A 6 page discussion of the environmental and genetic causes of eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. While it is an established belief that eating disorders are more likely to affect females than males, both sexes are affected. The reasons undoubtedly relate to genetics as well as to environmental factors. These reason also could be expected, however, to relate to the limited understanding of eating disorders. Interestingly, as our knowledge of this condition increases so too do the statistics regarding its manifestation in males. While the primary victim of eating disorders still appears to be females, there is undoubtedly some intersex overlap in the factors causing the condition. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Ecofeminism
[ send me this essay ]
3 pages in length. Ecofeminism strives to address the myriad ills that plague social and ecological justice, with particular emphasis upon learning from past mistakes. In former discussions of what defines the true principles of ecofeminism and its management, critics contend there are several problems with the overall concept, not the least of which includes the extent of ambiguity in relation to definition and assessment. While the theory may be accused of having no central definition, however, there is no misunderstanding as to the foundational basis of its overall mission. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Economic Empowerment and its Relation to Women's Reproductive Choice and Health
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page examination of the contention that "the relationship between women's employment and fertility is 'elusive and ambiguous'". The author speculates that in some situations women's employment might be likely to result in greater sexual and reproductive choice. This contention can be demonstrated with a look at microcredit programs, programs which are designed to give women an economic leg-up in the world of business. Sometimes such programs, however, have unexpected results, results which could serve more as a detriment than as a benefit to women's reproductive choice and health. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
