Augustan Laws, Women And Prostitution

According to such laws women could be divorced if caught within an adulterous situation; however, men were effectively exempt from any social humiliation if they are also found to be a participant of adultery. These clear-cut double standards represented the very foundation of Augustan laws; indeed, enforcement was so stringent that women would have no recourse other than to be pushed into a life of prostitution if their blood relations cast them out.
