Racial and Cultural Bias in IQ Testing
[ send me this essay ]
A 10 page paper discussing the layers of bias contained in the development of IQ tests. It was nearly a half century ago that professionals began questioning the reliability and validity of IQ tests that existed at the time and began to look more closely at the influences of environment and socioeconomic standing. Emphasis on multiculturalism further contributed to the realization that there was a strong possibility that IQ tests were not measuring what test developers – and those using the results – believed they were measuring. Though there still has been no great improvement in the tests’ abilities to overcome cultural and socioeconomic barriers, it appears that there is greater awareness of the inherent deficiencies of current testing methods. A 5 page paper which discusses the validity of Mary Kurcinka's book, 'Raising Your Spirited Child.' Although this book is not necessarily written by a academic specialist, it is a book which has taken a great deal of scientific research, and behavioral research into consideration in providing a very complete book that enables the parent or adult to deal with the spirited child. Kurcinka provides many examples of children and their experiences in a successfully illustrative way which gives the reader the notion that there is hope for these spirited children, without having to resort to the more commonly used method of control these days, medication. Randy Pausch's "The Last Lecture" - Experience And Failure
[ send me this essay ]
3 pages in length. When Randy Pausch said "experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted" in The Last Lecture speech he gave shortly before his death, his intention was to get people thinking about the benefit of failure. It is not that the late professor wanted others to make a habit out of not being successful but rather he valued failure as a key learning tool in the lessons of life. His message in short was that from failure comes enlightenment. Most people are taught to avoid defeat and disappointment because it somehow equates to less than a winning character. Pausch wanted to make an obvious point about how absolutely off the mark that type of indoctrination is to the quest for achievement, so he incorporated the aspect of failure into his class curriculum by awarding one student team a stuffed penguin who took the greatest risk and experienced the greatest failure. Symbolic of Pausch's penchant for empowering others, the penguin stood for the need to try and fail in order to succeed in life. No additional sources cited.
