Elderly: Depression And Suicide
[ send me this essay ]
8 pages in length. The trend in elderly suicide has fluctuated over the past three decades to reveal a distinct correlation between depression and the desire to take one's life (McKeown et al). No fewer than two million of the more than thirty-five million elderly in America have some form of diagnosed depression; another five million exhibit symptoms too slight to warrant an official diagnosis or go undiagnosed altogether. The mid fifties marks the recognition of depression and the beginning thoughts of suicide particularly in men (Kaplan). As of the year 2000, eighteen percent of suicide deaths reflected those age sixty-five and older; to define this statistic even further, Caucasian men at least eighty-five years old represented the majority of the deaths (Older Adults: Depression and Suicide Facts). Broken down by age groups, 2004 statistics reveal the following number of suicides: 45-54: 16.6%; 55-64: 13.8%; 65-74: 12.9%; 75-84: 16.9%; 85 and over: 16.4% (Health, United States, 2006). Emotion
[ send me this essay ]
10 pages in length. Typically recognized as such sentiment as happiness, sadness, anger, frustration, love and disgust, emotions are what bring together and help express what people feel. The spontaneity of emotions makes them both volatile and genuine; at the same time, the irrationality of some emotional outbursts implies the obstruction of normal thought progression. There is, however, no way to escape emotion inasmuch as it governs man's entire subjective response to the world around him. Bibliography lists 11 sources.

Emotional Characteristics Of Creative/Gifted Children
[ send me this essay ]
5 pages in length. There is nothing inherently wrong with being smart, unless the individual is a child who does not understand why he or she is having difficulty fitting in to his or her age group. Gifted children often feel shunned from others because they cannot readily relate to them on the same academic level; many gifted children are pushed forward into higher grades with classmates much older and, thereby, have even less in common with them. Indeed, the double-edged sword of being a gifted child lends itself to a multitude of confusing emotions – particularly in the adolescent stage – when it comes to fitting in with his or her peers. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
