Rawls and Nozick on Equality
[ send me this essay ]
A 7 page essay that contrasts and compares the work of these political/social philosophers. John Rawls and Robert Nozick are two noted social philosophers with very different conceptualizations pertaining to economic justice. Basically, the approach to social justice advocated by Rawls is an egalitarian one that seeks to do away with economic equalities, as well as any morally arbitrary factor that confers advantages on any member of society at the expense of others (Honderich 745). Nozick takes a totally different view and argues that the state cannot take a large role either in the economy or society without violating the rights of the individuals involved (Honderich 629). This examination of these two arguments explores how each philosopher perceives the topics of equality and social justice within a framework of democracy before presenting this writer/tutor's personal opinion and how Rawls and Nozick would react to offered conclusions. However, "No matter how ambitious an international relations research project may be,…every scholar approaches it from a particular point of view" (Kauppi and Viotti, 1999, p. 1). From the basic perspective of realism, Kauppi and Viotti (1999) detail how two opposing theoretical camps have diverged from this traditional orientation, pluralism and globalism. Realism: Main Strengths And Weaknesses In Describing World Politics
[ send me this essay ]
8 pages in length. As the world embarks upon the new millennium, questions abound with regard to events that occurred during the twentieth century. With particular emphasis upon those that took place just in the past several years, one can surmise that many of these incidents can be attributed to idealism, a philosophy that employs the conscious desire to change the world, as opposed to efforts
based in realism. Issues such as national security, arms control, global economy, foreign policy, peace efforts have, indeed, not been grounded in a realistic composure. When one
assesses the main strengths and weaknesses of realism in describing world politics, the primary contention that exists is its constant battle against the notion of idealism. The writer discusses how this theory is quite relevant for addressing global contingencies in the 21st
century, inasmuch as it is a chronic lack of realism, combined with cynical politics that continues to threaten world issues. Bibliography lists 9 sources.
