Some political scientists want to claim that Morgenthau's realism theory of the balance of power is dead because the former Soviet Union was able to split apart without bloodshed, but few give any credence to the globalization of business and its effects on the lives of citizens of previously isolationist countries. If Chinese farmers with little access to world news can understand that there is prosperity in regions of even their country and attempt to join in, can world leaders and nations be expected to react less fervently? Of course it is ridiculous to broadly state that a run for the money is the sole reason behind the peaceful shift of power in countries around the world, but it is no less ridiculous to claim that Morgenthau's theory is any less valid now than before the breakup of the former Soviet Union.
