Milton/Rossetti Comparison

A 5 page essay that contrasts and compares works by Milton and Rossetti. John Milton (1608-1674), in his epic poem Paradise Lost, and Christina Rossetti (1830-1894), in her poem The Goblin Market, each present narratives in which women are tempted by sin that is represented allegorically by fruit. In each poem, there are also depictions of acts of love. But while these features indicate that the poems bear similarities, they also have fundamental differences that deal mainly with the poet's depiction of women. Eve is depicted as shallow, easily deceived and not capable of thinking as rationally as Adam. Rossetti's heroine, Lizzie, on the other hand, is clever, self-sacrificing, and saves her sister from sin through her actions. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Milton/Satan in Paradise Lost

Examination of the way in which Milton develops the character of Satan reveals the insidious and corrupting nature of evil, as Milton describes the devolution of the once beautiful angel Lucifer into the despicable grotesque that is Satan. There are times when we hope that is true with the arts-that it can be arranged and ordered, and that which we do not understand, can simply be covered, or hidden. Artistic "modernism" was not content with historic pigeon-holing and sought to give voice to individualism, and expression to that part of our world that was locked between two world wars. Moore & Bishop as Dickinson's Descendants

A 19 page research paper/essay that explores the question of whether or not a line of descent can be traced from Emily Dickinson to twentieth century poets Marianne Moore and Elizabeth Bishop. Examination of literature shows that the preponderance of scholarly opinion supports the idea that a line of poetic descent can be found that runs from Dickinson and travels to both Moore and Bishop. However, the evidence does not support the idea of a linear descent that runs like a straight line from Dickinson to Moore to Bishop, as this descent is more like a branching tree rather than a line of heredity. The relationship between the three poets can be found, first of all, by examining literary scholarship that looks at both thematic and stylistic similarities. In addition to reviewing scholarly comment, however, this relationship can also be shown by examining three representative poems: specifically, "The Wind begun to knead the Grass" by Dickinson; "Poetry" by Marianne Moore; and "Rain Towards Morning" by Elizabeth Bishop.
