Milton/Rossetti Comparison
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page essay that contrasts and compares works by Milton and Rossetti. John Milton (1608-1674), in his epic poem Paradise Lost, and Christina Rossetti (1830-1894), in her poem The Goblin Market, each present narratives in which women are tempted by sin that is represented allegorically by fruit. In each poem, there are also depictions of acts of love. But while these features indicate that the poems bear similarities, they also have fundamental differences that deal mainly with the poet's depiction of women. Eve is depicted as shallow, easily deceived and not capable of thinking as rationally as Adam. Rossetti's heroine, Lizzie, on the other hand, is clever, self-sacrificing, and saves her sister from sin through her actions. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Milton/Satan in Paradise Lost
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page essay that discusses the character of Satan. An epic hero is traditionally an example of a culture's ideal man, that is, someone who embodies all of the virtues that a particular society esteems above all others. A tragic hero is quite similar, as he embodies noble virtues, but suffers downfall due to a tragic flaw. In John Milton's epic poem "Paradise Lost," the character of Satan combines these two literary conventions, offering readers one of the most psychologically complex and fascinating characters in all of literature. Examination of the way in which Milton develops the character of Satan reveals the insidious and corrupting nature of evil, as Milton describes the devolution of the once beautiful angel Lucifer into the despicable grotesque that is Satan. Modernist Poetry: Baudelaire and Rilke.
[ send me this essay ]
(5pp) One of the wonderful things about
old-fashioned roll-top desks, was that there were
many cubbyholes for sorting out "things;" then if
there was still too much mess, one had the option
of just pulling down the top cover and hiding it
all. There are times when we hope that is true
with the arts-that it can be arranged and ordered,
and that which we do not understand, can simply be
covered, or hidden. Artistic "modernism" was not
content with historic pigeon-holing and sought to
give voice to individualism, and expression to
that part of our world that was locked between two
world wars. The work of Baudelaire and Rilke in the
Moderist framework will be considered.
Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Moore & Bishop as Dickinson's Descendants
[ send me this essay ]
A 19 page research paper/essay that explores the question of whether or not a line of descent can be traced from Emily Dickinson to twentieth century poets Marianne Moore and Elizabeth Bishop. Examination of literature shows that the preponderance of scholarly opinion supports the idea that a line of poetic descent can be found that runs from Dickinson and travels to both Moore and Bishop. However, the evidence does not support the idea of a linear descent that runs like a straight line from Dickinson to Moore to Bishop, as this descent is more like a branching tree rather than a line of heredity. The relationship between the three poets can be found, first of all, by examining literary scholarship that looks at both thematic and stylistic similarities. In addition to reviewing scholarly comment, however, this relationship can also be shown by examining three representative poems: specifically, "The Wind begun to knead the Grass" by Dickinson; "Poetry" by Marianne Moore; and "Rain Towards Morning" by Elizabeth Bishop. Bibliography lists 17 sources.

Morning Beach

3 pages in length. Morning Beach might be considered an allusion to the very beginning of one's life quest when everything is still fresh and unadulterated by a lifetime of struggle and disappointment. To appreciate all the elements of this brief morning encounter – rather than look upon them as irritating or unnecessary – illustrates the extent to which these otherwise insignificant aspects of sand and water spray actually have an impact upon the writer.
