“Mozart, 1935” by Wallace Stevens
[ send me this essay ]
This 5 page report discusses
poet Wallace Stevens’ (1879-1955) work “Mozart, 1935.” As Mozart
played the present during his life, Stevens will now “play the
present” through his own interpretive lyricism which is every bit
as compelling in the context of poetry in the 20th century as
Mozart’s music was compelling to his admirers of the 18th
century. By having the pianist play the out of tune piano, the
sound, not necessarily the music, works to drown out the voices
of the angry stone-throwers in the street. It is a subtle poem
set against the background of the Great Depression and offering
ideas regarding the impact an artist can make regardless of the
style he or she chooses to use. No additional sources.

This 4 page
interpretive essay discusses the 20th century Hungarian poet
Attila Jozsef’s volume of poems titled “Perched on Nothing’s
Branch,” as well as the actual poem of the same title. Using
that poem and another titled “Nothing” allows the reader a
glimpse into Jozsef’s nihilism and an understanding that he could
not, nor could his poetry, be categorized under the singular
adjective of “nihilistic,” even while his hopelessness conveys a
sense of utter despair. No additional sources.
