To What Extent, If Any, Is Thomas Hobbes A Liberal?
[ send me this essay ]
7 pages in length. When one examines the nature and objective of Thomas Hobbes' political, social and economic stance, it is clear to those wholly unfamiliar with his more explicit assertions that he is, most assuredly, a liberal. Tocqueville, Emerson and Bellah On Individualism
[ send me this essay ]
5 pages in length. Americans have long admired the spirit of individualism, which the resources of this nation have supported. There was a seemingly inexhaustible supply of land and wilderness to support a lifestyle apart from the conformity of established communities. But at the end of the twentieth century land is not endless and a relationship with society is inescapable. Balancing individual rights against the concerns and needs of the community is illustrated in such controversies as random road blocks to test for drunk drivers, limitations in speech when it comes
to pornography, curfews for teenagers, and rationing of health care. Although this issue has immediacy, the tension between the individual and the community has long been recognized. Alexis de Tocqueville analyzed the pitfalls of individualism when he wrote "Democracy in America," while Ralph Waldo Emerson, in "Self-Reliance," praised the
diversity, nonconformity, and individualism of Americans. Robert Bellah addressed religious individualism in his book entitled "Habits of the Heart." Is there such a thing as too much individualism? Does a community have rights? Do
the rights of the individual outweigh those of the
community? Bibliography lists 6 sources.
