This is a 7 page paper discussing the ideals of the radical revolutionary and the liberal democratic schools of thought. The ideals of the radical revolutionary schools of thought as seen in the writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Karl Marx and Frederick Engels contrast in the basic elements of individuals and society from the school of liberal democratic thought advocated by Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and America’s founding fathers. Within the radical revolutionary school of thought governments were given certain rights over individuals in return for the protection of their citizens and the allocation of justice and the products of labor. Liberal democratic thought on the other hand believed that men were born were certain natural rights which could not be taken away unless voluntarily. In addition, if governments did not promote the general will of the people, they could be withdrawn. The basic rights of life, liberty and happiness in addition to Locke’s private property were the most consistent features found in the liberal democratic school and which were promoted in America and France shortly after they were proposed.
