Lingenfelter/Transforming Culture
[ send me this essay ]
An 11 page summary of Sherwood Lingenfelter's book Transforming Culture, A Challenge for Christian Mission (1998). The writer offers chapter-by-chapter synopses, outlining primary points. The premise for his text is based on the observation that in spreading Christianity, missionaries have done so within the context of their own cultural perspective. The problem is that "Missionaries have succeeded in bringing a biblically informed worldview, but one that is thoroughly contaminated by their culture" (Lingenfelter 12). The author questions whether or not it is possible to offer the world a "truly transforming gospel" or if Christians are necessarily limited to "reproducing our own cultural reflection of Christianity" (Lingenfelter 12). The remainder of the book suggests that this is possible and the author outlines practical suggestions for accomplishing this task. No other sources cited.

Love & Knowledge/Writing of 3 Medieval Theologians
[ send me this essay ]
A 9 page essay that contrasts and compares the writing of 3 medieval theologians. At their most fundamental level, the writing of medieval theologians Thomas Aquinas, Bernard of Clairvaux and Saint Bonaventure are in agreement with each other in that they each perceive the relation between love and knowledge as being intrinsically intertwined and interconnected with the context of human experience. However, in the centuries since the medieval period, the mindset or worldview of Western civilization has changed, as defining precepts moved from a focus on God towards a focus on rationality. Consequently, the scholasticism of the Middle Ages is often difficult for the modern reader to fully appreciate or understand. Due to this fact, the writing of Bernard of Clairvaux provides the most compelling account of the relationship between love and knowledge as it fits better with the modern worldview that still tends to rely on the rational perspective of the Enlightenment. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Luke 15:11-24/A Reason to Celebrate
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page dialectical method sermon on the parable of the prodigal son. Many Christians seems to feel that to be devout and feel that they are "good" Christians, they must assume a worldview that is a throwback to Puritanism. They see the world as extremely serious; themselves as miserable sinners who should be properly humble and contrite and they also feel that it is somehow inappropriate to show too much joy or pleasure at being alive in God's good world. Luke 15:11-24, the parable of the "prodigal son," demonstrates that this worldview goes against the express teaching of Jesus, which offers believers the message that there is reason to celebrate and no need for sorrow, as God welcomes any sinner who believes with open arms and a loving embrace. Bibliography lists 1 source.
