Oliver Stone: Historical Revisionist/Filmatic Biographer In "Platoon" And "Born On The Fourth Of July"
[ send me this essay ]
6 pages in length. Meant more derogatorily than complimentary, Oliver Stone's reputation as an historical revisionist speaks to the writer/producer/director's tendency to rewrite history according to a less biased and more truthful depiction. According to the tenets of historical revisionism, the very notion of history is that which is part actual fact and part embellished fact, bringing together an incident that may have been interpreted differently than it really happened. Stone's intent is to realign those aspects that have been told and retold with glaring inaccuracies and provide an explicable – if not controversial – version. By the same token, his approach as a filmatic biographer provides him the opportunity to display his rendering of historical events such as the Vietnam War and capture its truth on film. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
