Edward Zwick's "Glory": Power And Authority

5 pages in length. Based upon the letters of Colonel Robert G. Shaw, director Edward Zwick's "Glory" addresses the issues of power and authority within a multiracial setting. Shaw, who was an officer in the Federal Army during the American Civil War, volunteered to lead the first company of black soldiers; from this experience, he was forced to deal with the prejudices of both the enemy – who had orders to kill commanding officers of blacks – as well as of his own fellow officers. Clearly, this was to unfold as a period of social acceptance not only for the white officer but also for his black soldiers. No additional sources cited.

The play “Los Vendidos” by Luis Valdez uses a great many elements of satire and irony to show the stereotypes of Mexican Americans which have been created and are expected within American society.
