The Impacts of Second Hand Smoke to Lung Function in Children: A Proposed Study
[ send me this essay ]
A 21 page overview of the impacts of second hand smoke in pulmonary function. Contends that secondary smoke can be linked to such a diversity of pulmonary conditions as lung cancer, asthma, and respiratory infection from a variety of viruses and bacteria. Suggests that children in particular are susceptible to this impact. Suggests an experimental design to better quantify those problems utilizing a sample base of patients already hospitalized in pediatric wards for both pulmonary and non-pulmonary complaints. Provides sample surveys designed to be administered to children age eleven to fifteen and their parents to identify the degree of environmental smoke in the home. Relies on the utilization of salivary testing for cotinine, a metabolite of nicotine, to further quantify the degree of smoking which an individual is exposed to in the home. Suggests that coupling this information with pulmonary function testing which has already occurred in the clinical situation would provide a ready, cost-effective, means of quantifying the impact of secondary smoke on pulmonary function.

The Importance of Student Autonomy in the Education of Health Professionals
[ send me this essay ]
This is an 11 page paper discussing the importance of student autonomy in the education of health care professionals. Health professionals within the health care environment are expected to handle autonomous decisions, independent problem solving and administration throughout their careers. When students enter medical or nursing programs however, they have had little or no exposure to student-directed learning or autonomy but instead have relied on teacher-directed or teacher-controlled education. The transition between the teacher-directed student and the autonomous professional must therefore occur throughout the medical and health care higher educational programs. Several studies have reported that medical students in particular have had little autonomous learning prior to entering medical school and throughout medical school they undergo certain psychiatric pressures which they find are contradictory and become very disillusioned. It has been found however, that teacher/clinicians and students both benefit mentally and professionally the more student autonomy is used within the educational process. Teaching physicians are slowly being taught themselves to restructure their traditional teaching practices to those which include increased student autonomy. This not only increases the students’ knowledge, confidence and social skills with their colleagues, patients, and members of the community but also helps with time constraints placed on physicians. Studies of students within health care education programs and professionals in the field also have shown that learning and career satisfaction increases with autonomy thus leading to better retention within the programs and within the field. Student autonomy also allows for differences found within students in regards to learning strategies and future professional specialties. Since autonomy is expected within the professional environment, programs which include student autonomy as part of the learning process produce graduates who are more experienced in independent professional situations, better problem solvers, are interactive, confident and satisfied with their chosen careers.

The Importance of Treatment of ADHD in Children in Regards to Lessening the Likelihood of Future Criminal Behavior and Substance Abuse
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 7 page paper discussing the importance of early intervention and treatment consisting of medication and therapy in children with ADHD. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects an estimated 3-7% of school children and overall it has been estimated that in the U.S. alone, 8 to 15 million Americans suffer from ADD. ADHD in children is described by physician Stephen J. Gislason as a term which refers to “restless, distractible children who have a knack for disrupting order at home and at school” who are prone to “poor impulse control, often display abrupt mood swings, have inappropriate anger, and sometimes are violent”. While children who have ADHD may suffer from inattention or poor memory, most have “average or above intelligence”. In many cases, children who have ADHD may improve with age but just as many children are considered “permanently handicapped by a combination of poor achievement, low self-esteem, antisocial behavior, and persisting problems of disorganized psychic energy” and it is considered “likely that juvenile delinquency and, later, criminal adaptations and often substance abuse are linked to the ADHD complex.
