The Life And Writing Of Kate Chopin
[ send me this essay ]
Kate Chopin wrote at the turn of
the century, toward the end of the Victorian era when the rights
accorded to women were restricted to those delegated and allowed by the
husband or father. This 5 page paper argues that in her short stories,
including Desiree's Baby and The Story Of An Hour, she uses irony to
present the idea of a woman's chaffing at the bonds that society has
provided and acting in a manner that is contrary to the social norms.

The Life-Altering Effect of Trauma
[ send me this essay ]
A 6 page essay that looks at T.C. Boyle's novel The Tortilla Curtain and Lawrence Kasdan's film The Grand Canyon, each of which picture male middle-class, white protagonists who undergo a traumatic and life-altering event that has racial overtones. In Boyle's novel, trauma substantiates Delaney's nascent racism into something concrete and compelling, which subsequently takes over his life. Grand Canyon, a similar trauma opens Mack to new possibilities and new ways of perceiving his humanity and that of others. The ways in which these two men differ points to the dichotomy that exists in the ways in which people can react to traumatic events and points to the truth that how one reacts is a choice. The Lifestyle of the Jazz Age as Reflected in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Novels “The Great Gatsby”, “This Side of Paradise” and “Tender is the Night”
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 6 page paper discussing elements of self-involvement, greed, materialism, and immoral behavior in three novels by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Throughout the novels of F. Scott Fitzgerald, readers very much begin to understand the great deal of self-involvement, greed, materialism, and immoral behavior which was prevalent during the 1920s in America and was also a world in which Fitzgerald and his wife were very much involved. While “This Side of Paradise” was published when Fitzgerald was not yet successful, the central character of Amory Blaine comments on how he is sick of a system in which the rich always benefit yet at the same time he does not seem overly convicted but instead would find it easier if he was rich himself. Jay Gatsby in “The Great Gatsby” deceives the rich woman he pursues, Daisy, only to realize that regardless of how wealthy he became, by mainly illegal means, she would always be his superior materially. Similarly, in “Tender is the Night”, Dick Diver wants to become the best psychologist ever and while he marries the women he pursues, who is also his superior in wealth, he later abandons her mentally during her time in need and begins to look elsewhere for love.
