The Depiction of Single Women in "Streetcar Named Desire" and "Sula"
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page paper which compares and contrasts how single women are depicted in Tennessee William's "A Streetcar Named Desire" and Toni Morrison's "Sula." For the most part, William's tale has one primary character who is single, that being Blanche. And, in this character we are presented with a very lost woman who finds herself alone. She is essentially useless and incredibly unstable due to her lack of a male counterpart, thereby illustrating that William's play presents single women as losers to one degree or another. In Morrison's book we are given the same sort of depiction, but perhaps only from the other characters in the book. The reader of the book understands that the single women in the book are strong and sensitive individuals, and perhaps a bit more intelligent than many women who are attached. No additional sources cited.

The Desire to be Free as Found in Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” and Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper”
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 4 page paper discussing the “desire to be free” as found in Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” and Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper”. Writers Kate Chopin and Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrote about the oppression of women and the helplessness many women felt within marriage during the late 19th century. Both women wrote of the personal and psychological experiences of the women of the day in which through everyday life, women were mainly identified only as the wives of their husbands and had to defer to their husbands for most if not all decisions. The short stories, Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” and Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” are two examples of the different approaches taken to exemplify women’s desire to be free from the confines of their lives within marriage and the dominance of men in making the decisions. While Chopin’s story tells of one woman’s shift into elation upon the realization that she will be free to make her own decisions because of her husband’s death, Gilman’s work delves deeper into the psychological struggle of a woman confined by her husband for “rest” in a room that only throws her deeper into madness and eventually leads to her finding her own way to release herself. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
