Philip Caputo's "A Rumor Of War"
[ send me this essay ]
10 pages in length. That Philip Caputo, son to a middle class family from Westchester, Illinois and Pulitzer Prize winner (Sweet, 7-8), was no different than any other red-blooded American off to war and ready to defend his country is made quite clear from the outset; what takes the reader by surprise, however, is the manner by which his enthusiastic idealism is soon replaced with the horrific realities of armed battle where people are killed without so much as a second thought. Caputo – who "gained literary prominence from the publication of his memoirs" (Anonymous 14) – turns into the very individual he at one time chastises for being weak and callous, never realizing until deeply entrenched within the blood and guts of battle that the transformation from foolhardy invincibility to desensitized murderer occurs in the blink of an eye. Only someone who has lived this hell on earth can reach the depths of dehumanized portrayal that Caputo does, choosing his words ever so carefully to depict the authenticity of being in the Vietnam war. Bibliography lists 10 sources.
