Oates/How I Contemplated the World... & Postmodernism
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page essay on Joyce Carol Oates' short story "How I Contemplated the World From the Detroit House of Corrections and Began My Life Over Again," which offers a distinctly postmodern view of the life of an unnamed sixteen-year-old female protagonist. Examination of this narrative demonstrates that it is postmodernism that makes the writing of this story possible, as Oates foregoes the narrative conventions of the past in order to present a structure and perspective that conveys a degree psychological complexity that would otherwise not be possible. [ send me this essay ]
This 6 page
report discusses Octavia Butler’s 1987 novel “Dawn” in which she
presents the theme of slavery in the service of another beings’
hierarchy and sense of survival and order. “dawn” became the
first book in a trilogy, followed by “Adulthood Rites” (1988) and
“Imago” (1989). Nuclear war has decimated Earth in “Dawn” and
human beings are almost extinct. “People” from another planet
arrive and set about saving the humans and restoring the
environment of Earth. They place most of the humans into
suspended animation so they can begin the laborious processes
required for the planet’s recovery. However, the aliens have
their own agenda and that is to enslave humans to meet their own
needs. Themes of slavery are constantly present in “Dawn” and
