Jack Kerouac's "On The Road" - The Freedom To Move Around
[ send me this essay ]
3 pages in length. The thesis this passage illustrates is how living in the here and now is the only true way to realize the extent of one's existence. To some, Kerouac's passage may represent nothing short of a rambling incongruence of unconnected thoughts that somehow pertain to the aspect of travel, however, those who can see beyond the superficial element of literary prose clearly understand the yearning for life's experiences that compel one to leave behind every nuance of one's past and head for the unknown of tomorrow's future. No additional sources cited.

Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road” and the Character of “Old Bull Lee”
[ send me this essay ]
This 5 page report discusses how Jack Kerouac constantly offered the world a unique perception of the world through his writing and uses the example of the character of Bull Lee in “On the Road” to demonstrate how a person can live on the very edge of “normal” society. By the time the reader meets Bull Lee, it is clear that the life he and his family leads is as disconnected from the mainstream of society, even more than that of the travelers. Bibliography lists one source.

Jack L. Chalker's "A Jungle Of Stars"
[ send me this essay ]
7 pages in length. The manner by which Jack L. Chalker's first science fiction novel A Jungle Of Stars mirrors contemporary society is illustrative of how the passing of time does not necessarily alter the climate of social existence. Chalker's protagonist, Paul Carlton Savage, is tempted with immortality if he provides his services in exchange; however, what Savage is required to do in order to obtain his immortality represents the struggles of good and evil that exist today, yesterday and always will in the future. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Jack London/To Build A Fire
[ send me this essay ]
A 12 page essay that discusses both versions of London's most famous short story. The earliest version, published in 1902, appeared in Youth's Companion and was written for a juvenile audience. London produced a second version of the story in 1908 and it was published in The Century Magazine. The second version of the story is famous as London's best work and is clearly for an adult audience. While the stories are different in both style and content, due to their intended audiences, both delve heavily into the psychological makeup of their protagonists and, in each, London describes the protagonist's perception in relating each man's fate. In so doing, London offers clear and perceptive insight into the psychology of risk-taking behavior for a young and older man, showing both the similarities and the differences in their perception of a dire situation. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Jack London: The Iron Heel.
[ send me this essay ]
(4 pp). A narrator, seven centuries down the road tells us of a "manuscript" he has found. "(There are not ) errors of fact, but errors of interpretation. Looking back across the seven centuries that have lapsed since Avis Everhard completed her manuscript, events, and the bearings of events, that were confused and veiled to her, are clear to us. She lacked perspective. She was too close to the events she writes about. Nay, she was merged in the events she has described." Then we get two different versions of the story or history of a massive labor revolution.
