Family Dynamics as Seen Through the Literature of the Ages
[ send me this essay ]
This
5 page report discusses the fact that great epic literature can
always serve as a means by which social theorists and historians
are able to gain some measure of understanding into a culture’s
ideals and belief systems. Families and family dynamics are key
ingredients in literature throughout the ages. The Bible, “The
Epic of Gilgamesh,” Shakespeare’s “King Lear,” the comedies of
Aristophanes, and the poetry of Sappho are all proof of that. No
additional sources listed.

Family Dysfunction as Presented by Faulkner and Shepard
[ send me this essay ]
A 20
page paper discussing the progress of family dysfunction in the 20th century using the
characters of Faulkner's "The Sound and the Fury" and Sam Shepard's "Buried Child."
These characters present an overwhelmingly depressing picture of the dysfunction of the
family as it has progressed with alcohol as its origin. The Compsons are no more effective
than is Dodge and Halie's family, but family members are more constrained by societal
norms of what a "family" should be. They do at least maintain a pretense of being a unit,
even though they have ejected Caddie. Shepard's family also ejects the most sane of its
number in excluding Vince and refusing to acknowledge him. Taken together, the two
families demonstrate the lengths to which they will go to protect their resident alcoholic
and join with him in his own dependency. Bibliography lists 14 sources.

Family In Faulkner
[ send me this essay ]
The family in America has many definitions and
connotations, the most prevalent being 'dysfunctional'. In William
Faulkner's The Sound And The Fury and Absalom! Absalom! the family plays
a significant role in the plot development as well as the
characterizations of the family members. This 5 page paper argues that
the dysfunctionality of the Sutpens is seen as greater than the Compsons
merely because it was more public. The disintegration of both families
is inevitable given the essence of the family structure. No additional
sources are listed.

Family Ties in Harriet Jacob's 'Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl'
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page paper
discussing the violation of family ties as an anti-slavery argument. The very nature of the system
of slavery was such that families rarely were able to stay together. Most slave owners viewed
their slaves as "stock," to be bred in pairs that held promise of producing healthy, strong workers.
Linda Brent was unable to determine her own path in any aspect of her life aside from one
strategic alliance with a white man. If the family is indeed the basis of the successful society, then
that embracing slavery is doomed to failure. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
