1791 and the Mozart Movie.
[ send me this essay ]
(5 pp) What we shall be looking for in paper are
the differences between the 1984 film Amadeus,
directed by Peter Shafer, and 1791 - Mozart's Last
Year by HC Robbins Landon (1999). As one begins
to study Landon's scholarly, but readable book, we
will begin to find many differences indeed. One
might even wonder how the movie veered so far
from the truth, but was such a great box office
hit - obviously it was the music that did most
of the work.

1984/2014
[ send me this essay ]
A 3 page essay that looks at two chilling visions of life in a fascist state. In George Orwell's chilling novel 1984, he describes life in England under totalitarian rule, where the elite rule with authoritarian control and Big Brother, as a symbol of the state, watches and keeps track of every detail of citizens' personal lives. In her 2004 novel, America 2014, An Orwellian Tale, Dawn Blair proposes that a similar transformation takes over the United States. The premise of Blair's text is that, with the rationalization that authoritarianism is justified by the war on terrorism, America will exchange its freedoms for the illusion of security and become a one-party, totalitarian state. The writer briefly looks at both novels and then discusses whether or not the US is endanger of becoming totalitarian. Citing a recent article, the writer feels that this is a real threat and that Orwell and Blair's books should be considered as accurate warnings. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

3 View of American Society
[ send me this essay ]
A 7 page essay that contrasts and compares three works: Katherine Anne Porter's "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall," Mark Twain's "Corn-Pone Opinions," and Countee Cullen's poem "Incident." The writer argues that in each case, the author endeavors to reflect to the American people certain aspects of society that are contradictory to the prejudices that were evident during the time when these works were created. In other words, these works reflect aspects of the society in which they were created and, in doing so, provide a critique of that society. No additional sources cited.
