“The Prince” and “The Courtier”: A Comparison of the works by Machievelli and Castiglione
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page comparison of these Sixteenth Century works. The author contends that despite common perception, each of these works was written with the intent of providing insight to virtuosity and morality. They differ considerably, however, as to the exact nature of this insight. Although Machievelli is often looked at as being a man for whom the end justified the means regardless of how immoral and condemnable those means may have been, he could also be contended to be a man of virtue and high morals. Castiglione’s work, on the other hand, is most often accepted without question as being one which is reflective of virtuosity and morality. This paper explores these varying viewpoints. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

“The Prince” by Niccolo Machiavelli: Outline, The Author, Impact and Modern Relevance
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli. The Prince is a text written in 1505 by Niccolo Machiavelli which describes the political unrest in his home country of Italy and the invasion of Italy by the French. In order to preserve Italy, Machiavelli offers advice to the rulers of Italy on how to maintain a principality by the enforcement of power. The aspect of power is not to be confused with the greatness of the Church which because of its dominance and misperception of its power, has led to Italy’s weakness in the art of war. For princes to maintain their principalities, they must use the power of their own arms and not employ mercenaries for the protection of the principality at whatever cost. A ruler must also gain the popularity of the population and to do so must at least have the perception of maintaining the power with virtue even if that is not the case. Machiavelli did his writing by using an outside perspective of Italy and in doing so provided a political text which has been used by rulers ever since. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
