“Excalibur” the Movie and "Excalibur: A Novel of Arthur": A Comparison of Two Depictions of Arthurian Legend
[ send me this essay ]
An 8 page review of two different depictions of Arthurian legend. Released in 1981 by director and producer John Boorman, “Excalibur” ranks as one of the most historically accurate films ever created regarding the historical setting for Arthurian legend. While the film has the advantage of color movie photography and sound over the 1998 "Excalibur: A Novel of Arthur" by Bernard Cornwell, each is tremendously effective in their depiction of myth and historical circumstance and setting. “Factories in the Field”: A Review of the Book by Carey McWilliams
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page overview of the agricultural history of California. This author traces this history from the Spanish land grant to the early half of the twentieth century. Central to the tremendous development which occurred was the migrant worker, groups of which McWilliams describes as the “wake of a machine”. The industry of thousands of workers, some white, some yellow, some brown, is what has fueled California’s great corporate expansion into agriculture. It is that industry to which California should be the most beholding. The picture revealed by McWilliams, however, is not one of gratitude, it is instead one of monopolization and domination. “Fathers and Sons”: An Analysis of the Eighteenth Century Novel by Ivan Turgenev
[ send me this essay ]
A 9 page paper outlining the major theme of Turgenev’s novel contrasted with the social movements of the time. Identifies two major philosophical directions of the time, that which stood in respect of the age old institutions and ideologies of Russia and that of nihilism or positivism. Asserts that in many respects Turgenev’s “Fathers and Sons” was a call for the intelligensia of the day to reject the cold scientific calculation which characterized the movement and to at least partially reembrace romanticism. Demonstrates this assertion with quotes from the novel and an exhaustive review of the precepts of nihilism. No additional sources are listed.
