“Around the World in Eighty Days” and Examples of the National Geography Standards
[ send me this essay ]
This is an 11 page paper discussing “Around the World in Eighty Days” in regards to the National Geography Standards. When Jules Verne wrote “Around the World in Eighty Days” (1873), the world seemed a much larger place and was just beginning to become more easily circumnavigated in a relatively short time because of the technological advances. Using the National Geography Standards comprised of six essential elements which make up the eighteen standards, it is useful to note that the elements can be identified within Verne’s work. Verne wrote an adventure fantasy story well over a century ago but was able to convey many of the essential elements used in the geographical standards and descriptions still used today.

“Beloved,” “The Crucible,” “The Narrative of the Life of
Frederick Douglass,” and McCarthyism -- Stories of Boundaries
Imposed and Crossed
[ send me this essay ]
This 5 page report discusses the fact that
literary works often demonstrate the boundaries that can and
cannot be crossed and the barriers people place between
themselves and understanding their contemporaries. Morrison’s
Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “Beloved” demonstrated the ways in
which characters must deal with a past that constantly haunts
them. Likewise, it is clear in Frederick Douglass’ autobiography
that he never escaped having been born to a slave and being a
slave and the ways in which such a circumstance negated his
existence as a human being. Miller’s “The Crucible” serves as
yet another example of how humanity’s current circumstances can
be and often are defined by the past. Bibliography lists 3

“Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War”: A Review of the Book by Mark Bowden
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page review of the book detailing the 1993 downing of two MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters in Mogadishu and the fighting which extended through the night. This event now holds the record for the longest sustained American firefight since Vietnam. The author of this paper contends that if Bowden’s book can be criticized, that criticism would revolve around the fact that it devotes practically all of its attention to a bullet-by-bullet account of the fighting surrounding the downing of the American helicopters and their crews’ survival through the night and devotes relatively little effort to explaining the circumstances behind that downing. This paper fills in the gaps on those circumstances. No additional sources are listed.
