Russia: Overview of National Ideology & Interests, Power, Threats, Domestic Factors, Commitments, Military Strategy and Foreign Policy
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 7 page paper discussing the interest, ideology, threats, domestic factors, commitments, military strategy and international policy of the “new” Russia. Within the past century, Russia, the largest country in the world in area with a population of over 144,500,000, has undergone a great deal of structural change. The Russian Empire under the Romanov Dynasty was overthrown in 1917 and the Communists under Vladimir Lenin formed the U.S.S.R. The Soviets dominated the Russian people and their economy until in 1985 when General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev introduced glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring) as an attempt to modernize Communism eventually led to the severing of the Soviet Union into Russia and fourteen other independent republics (CIA, 2003). In the last decade, Russia has had to rebuild its political and social system to work within the world market economy and democracy. While international trade and interests are a major factor in the restructuring of the country, a great many internal conflicts must also be met such as the ongoing conflict in Chechnya. As part of the national response to the issues of international economics and boundary disputes, and the national social, medical and economic issues, Russia’s development of a new ideology to fit its country’s needs is one based on continued and increased national security.
