Review of “From ‘Death Sentence’ to ‘Good Cancer’: Couples’ Transformation of a Prostate Cancer”

A 6 page paper assessing this qualitative study undertaken to assist in informing nursing practice. The focus of this study by Maliski, Heilemann & McCorkle (2002) was to gain insight on how couples coped with the diagnosis of prostate cancer and how they navigated through the decision-making process to prostatectomy and beyond. The investigation and design are sound, but the lack of previous research leaves the current researchers with little guidance in their own study. The paper concludes that the effort is a good one, but is not generalizable to the larger population in that its sample consisted only of a rather homogeneous group in terms of ethnic, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds. Review of “Improved Rates of Compliance with Hand Antisepsis Guidelines: A Three-Phase Observational Study”

Researchers established baseline values regarding how often health care workers washed their hands in two ICUs in a single hospital; introduced a waterless alcohol-gel hand sanitizing agent; and recorded subsequent incidence of hand antisepsis following that introduction. They found that workers increased their hand antisepsis activities by a significant rate using a combination of soap-and-water washing and cleaning with the alcohol-gel agent. Cottrell (2000) provides a quite useful and highly relevant study directly applicable to the issue of stress among nurses. Though the author does not provide any research-supported follow-up on the intervention portion of the study, he provides alternatives that appear to be quite reasonable and naturally present the opportunity for further research in the future. The authors describe a qualitative study seeking to gain information about patients' views of catastrophic illness and injury. The paper analyzes problem statement, study purpose, sample selection, data collection, data analysis and the conclusions that the researchers draw. Review of "Developing a Caregiving Tradition in Opposition to One's Past: Lessons from a Longitudinal Study of Teenage Mothers"

Review of "Gender and Short-Term Recovery from Cardiac Surgery"

A 9 page paper critiquing a 2000 study of gender differences in recovery from cardiac surgery. The article is highly useful to nursing practice. It is methodologically strong and provides practicing nurses with sound and practical advice for their women patients undergoing cardiac surgery. The findings of this study provide information that nurses can directly communicate to women patients in the form of warning that any delay in feelings of wellbeing is only temporary; that with time (less than three months) they will be experiencing full benefits of their surgeries; and that those benefits will not only be physical but will include a stronger sense of wellbeing as well.
