Review of “From ‘Death Sentence’ to ‘Good Cancer’: Couples’ Transformation of a Prostate Cancer”
[ send me this essay ]
A 6 page paper assessing this qualitative study undertaken to assist in informing nursing practice. The focus of this study by Maliski, Heilemann & McCorkle (2002) was to gain insight on how couples coped with the diagnosis of prostate cancer and how they navigated through the decision-making process to prostatectomy and beyond. The investigation and design are sound, but the lack of previous research leaves the current researchers with little guidance in their own study. The paper concludes that the effort is a good one, but is not generalizable to the larger population in that its sample consisted only of a rather homogeneous group in terms of ethnic, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Review of “Improved Rates of Compliance with Hand Antisepsis Guidelines: A Three-Phase Observational Study”
[ send me this essay ]
A 6 page review and critique of an article published in the American Journal of Nursing in 2001. Researchers established baseline values regarding how often health care workers washed their hands in two ICUs in a single hospital; introduced a waterless alcohol-gel hand sanitizing agent; and recorded subsequent incidence of hand antisepsis following that introduction. They found that workers increased their hand antisepsis activities by a significant rate using a combination of soap-and-water washing and cleaning with the alcohol-gel agent. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Review of “Occupational Stress and Job Satisfaction in Mental Health Nursing: Focussed (sic) Interventions via Evidence-based Assessment”
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page paper reviewing the report of a qualitative study of stress among nurses in Britain’s National Health System. Cottrell (2000) provides a quite useful and highly relevant study directly applicable to the issue of stress among nurses. Though the author does not provide any research-supported follow-up on the intervention portion of the study, he provides alternatives that appear to be quite reasonable and naturally present the opportunity for further research in the future. Bibliography lists 1 source.

Review of “Predicting Family Health in Families of Young Adults with Severe Mental Illness”
[ send me this essay ]
A 6 page paper evaluating components of a nursing research article including the literature review, theoretical framework, methods, validity and ethics. The paper concludes that the article reports a study that is well designed and one in which the researcher jealously guarded against introducing bias. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Review of "An Alternative Approach: The Unfolding Model of Voluntary Employee Turnover"
[ send me this essay ]
A 6 page paper reviewing and discussing this study of why nurses chose to leave their jobs in the mid-1990s. The paper discusses the general focus of the study but concentrates on assessing the authors' use of statistical analyses for appropriate tests, reliability and validity. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Review of "Bearing Illness and Injury"
[ send me this essay ]
A 6 page review of an article appearing in the December 2000 issue of Western Journal of Nursing Research. The authors describe a qualitative study seeking to gain information about patients' views of catastrophic illness and injury. The paper analyzes problem statement, study purpose, sample selection, data collection, data analysis and the conclusions that the researchers draw. The study is good as a preliminary one, but the authors fail to address the issue of bias at any point. They still arrive at conclusions valuable to nursing, however. Bibliography lists 1 source.

Review of "Developing a Caregiving Tradition in Opposition to One's Past: Lessons from a Longitudinal Study of Teenage Mothers"
[ send me this essay ]
A 10 page paper providing a negative review of this article as any attempt at serious research, but praising the article for the author's obvious depth of caring. SmithBattle (2000) provides a touching narrative of the experiences of three teen mothers, but the effort should not be called a study. It lacks too many critical components of valid, reliable research to be included in that category of academic literature. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Review of "Don't Call Me Sweetie!"
[ send me this essay ]
A 6 page paper reviewing the report of an Australian study examining nurses' and patients' concept of nursing care. The researchers employed Q methodology, which combines qualitative and quantitative components to bring the study to conclusion. Much of the medical community still sees qualitative research as not being quite as "real" as quantitative study, and adding the quantitative component opens the study to being received by a wider range of individuals within the medical community. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Review of "Gender and Short-Term Recovery from Cardiac Surgery"
[ send me this essay ]
A 9 page paper critiquing a 2000 study of gender differences in recovery from cardiac surgery. The article is highly useful to nursing practice. It is methodologically strong and provides practicing nurses with sound and practical advice for their women patients undergoing cardiac surgery. The findings of this study provide information that nurses can directly communicate to women patients in the form of warning that any delay in feelings of wellbeing is only temporary; that with time (less than three months) they will be experiencing full benefits of their surgeries; and that those benefits will not only be physical but will include a stronger sense of wellbeing as well. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Review of "Outcomes of Therapeutic Massage for Hospitalized Cancer Patients"
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page paper critiquing a study of nurses' use of therapeutic massage. The subject matter of the study is not as important to this paper as is the analysis of procedures and tools. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
