Reflexology
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing reflexology, its origins and current practice. The practice of reflexology is said to have originated with the ancient Chinese, Egyptians and Native Americans with evidence being found on cave paintings found in a tomb in Egypt dated 2330 BC. However, the modern version of reflexology in which regions of the foot are associated with ten vertical zones throughout the body was first researched by Dr. William H. Fitzgerald in Hartford, Connecticut in the early 1900s. The practice of reflexology today is based on the original works of Fitzgerald and other therapists who refined his methods such as Dr. J.S. Riley and his student Eunice Ingham. A holistic therapy, reflexology’s aims are to relieve stress, pain and muscle tension, increase circulation and restore the body’s natural balance and harmony which has been plagued by disease. Although not generally considered a first line of defence by Western physicians, reflexology has become one of the more popular alternative medicine preferred by patients and clinical trials continue to test its effectiveness. Refusal Of Antipsychotic Medication By Clients Due To Side Effects: The Practitioner's Role As A Health Promoter/Educator
[ send me this essay ]
12 pages in length. Antipsychotic drugs represent a tremendous breakthrough in treating mental disorders; however, the side effects of these medications can often have a detrimental impact upon the recipient's physical and mental capacities. Such innocuous side effects might include constipation, blurred vision, dry mouth and urinary retention, all of which are mild when considering the exchange for mental balance, but when undesirable adverse reactions occur like weight gain, reduced sexual desire and drowsiness/sedated feeling, it is imperative that health promoters utilize pertinent educational tools in order to instruct their patients on the best health path to follow in relation to such side effects. The need for intervention in a mental health capacity is what comprises a significant portion of the health promoter's role. Employing Caplan's (1990) theory provides one with a better understanding of how to address the delicate balance between sustained mental health and a client's refusal of antipsychotic medication due to side effects, inasmuch as the theory is based much more upon values over and above evidence. Bibliography lists 13 sources.

At issue is what level any legal, medical, political and ethical elements come into play over the course of this decision-making process, as well as the extent to which the patient is competent enough to make such a potentially fatal choice. The writer touches upon several precedence setting cases. Bibliography lists 16 sources.
