The Importance of Student Autonomy in the Education of Health Professionals
[ send me this essay ]
This is an 11 page paper discussing the importance of student autonomy in the education of health care professionals. Health professionals within the health care environment are expected to handle autonomous decisions, independent problem solving and administration throughout their careers. When students enter medical or nursing programs however, they have had little or no exposure to student-directed learning or autonomy but instead have relied on teacher-directed or teacher-controlled education. The transition between the teacher-directed student and the autonomous professional must therefore occur throughout the medical and health care higher educational programs. Several studies have reported that medical students in particular have had little autonomous learning prior to entering medical school and throughout medical school they undergo certain psychiatric pressures which they find are contradictory and become very disillusioned. It has been found however, that teacher/clinicians and students both benefit mentally and professionally the more student autonomy is used within the educational process. Teaching physicians are slowly being taught themselves to restructure their traditional teaching practices to those which include increased student autonomy. This not only increases the students’ knowledge, confidence and social skills with their colleagues, patients, and members of the community but also helps with time constraints placed on physicians. Studies of students within health care education programs and professionals in the field also have shown that learning and career satisfaction increases with autonomy thus leading to better retention within the programs and within the field. Student autonomy also allows for differences found within students in regards to learning strategies and future professional specialties. Since autonomy is expected within the professional environment, programs which include student autonomy as part of the learning process produce graduates who are more experienced in independent professional situations, better problem solvers, are interactive, confident and satisfied with their chosen careers. Bibliography lists 11 sources.

The Importance of Teacher Involvement in Curriculum Development
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 3 page paper discussing the importance of teacher involvement in curriculum development. Within the last decade changes in curriculum planning in educational systems has led to an adoption of various planning strategies, some which involve teacher interaction and some which don’t, an evaluation of present and proposed systems, and teachers assessment guidelines in addition to a great deal of controversy in all areas. Studies in the United States have shown that curriculum implementation can only be successful if teachers and communities are involved in the development and implementation of curriculum and structural changes. While progress has been made in some states, the provinces in Canada are having more difficulty implementing curriculum and reforms due to decreased funding and unilateral administrative decisions which have not utilized the expertise of educators in the decision-making process. While cases can be made for a common curriculum, overall researchers and practice have shown that any curriculum change should involve the professional input of teachers as well as those invested in the educational programs, the communities. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

The Importance of Teaching Reading Comprehension and Decoding Skills
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 4 page paper discussing the teaching of reading comprehension and decoding skills especially in adolescent students. Reading is said to be primarily composed of two components: decoding (of particular words) and comprehension (of passages). In students with reading disabilities, educators need to focus on these two components in order for the students to progress in their reading skill, considered to be the most essential skill learned in school. While some researchers argue that reading comprehension and decoding are part of a progressive reading model and one component must be mastered before the next can be attempted, other researchers focus more so on what teaching skills can best be used to teach the vital components of decoding and comprehension. Adolescent students who struggle with reading have to go through the same instructional processes as younger readers in an attempt to improve their reading skills however older readers who have higher curriculum demands also must include additional learning strategies to increase their reading proficiency.
