Space Age Mathematics Education

A 20 page paper discussing the relationship between reforms in math education in the 1960s and 1970s and conditions in the space program. The Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957, and then was the first to put a man in space in 1961. Alan Shepard became the first American in space only three weeks later, but he did not orbit the Earth as the Russian astronaut did. Technological innovation and national embarrassment gave impetus to the change in math education in the early 1960s and the shift to New Math, but we allowed the pendulum to swing too far in the US. Further technological innovation and the reality of poor performance on an international level now is giving impetus to additional change, one approaching more of a middle ground. Spanglish

Spanking Verses Modern Forms of Behavioral Modification

The more traditional approach to child rearing incorporates spanking as a mild form of punishment. Spanking is employed as a means of correcting inappropriate behavior. The more contemporary approach to child rearing, however, often views spanking as an antiquated and cruel relict of our past. Many contend in fact that spanking is ineffective in terms of instilling correct behavior in a child. In many cases in fact spanking, although an effective deterrent of earlier generations, is not the most preferred means of behavioral modification in today’s environment.
