Public Schools & Their Communities
[ send me this essay ]
A 7 page research paper that examines the relationship between communities and their public schools. The writer argues that often, schools have been a battleground where differing concepts on education are tried and tested and communities vie with authorities for control of young minds. An examination of the relationship between schools and communities in America shows the issues surrounding this connection to be complex, frequently involving matters more related to race and politics than education. Public Schools as "Conformity Factories?"
[ send me this essay ]
A 3 page paper assessing schools' use of conformity. Schools do teach conformity. The KIPP program insists on conformity as a beginning point of demonstrating inner city children that there is a larger world than that which they have known. The Montessori method of following the child requires that the child be engaged in some learning activity, even if that activity is disguised as a game. Though each approach appears to be very different, each uses conformity as a beginning point for entrance into greater goals and ideas, and the ability to critically assess information rather than simply accepting any- and everything that their teachers pass to them. Conformity as an end point robs children of their potential. Conformity as a tool enhances their ability to achieve it. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Qualitative and Quantitative Considerations in Language Testing
[ send me this essay ]
A 3 page paper discussing the difficulties of measuring language proficiency. Several states have language-mastery requirements that public schools must achieve, and now the federal government has added a similar requirement for other states in the form of the No Child Left Behind program. As always, measurement of language proficiency can be difficult. Quantitative measurement – such as that provided through standardized testing – is seen as being most valid, but only if no other factors such as reading disability interfere. Qualitative measurement, perhaps as a conversation with individual students, may be necessary as well. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Qualitative And Quantitative Research Methods: Application Within Education Research
[ send me this essay ]
12 pages in length. Quantitative research should begin with an idea that is usually articulated as a hypothesis by the researcher which then, through measurement, generates data and then by deduction allows a conclusion to be drawn. In contrast to this method, qualitative research begins with intent to review a certain area. The researcher then collects data through observations and interviews and generates his or her ideas and hypotheses from these data. These inferences are largely made through what is known as inductive reasoning. The strength of the quantitative approach is in its reliability or the repeatability of the pattern. The same measurements should yield the same results every time. The strength of qualitative research lies in its validity or closeness to the truth. That means that good qualitative research, by using a diverse number of data collection methods, should actually touch the core of what is going on rather than just skimming the surface of the facts. The validity of qualitative methods is greatly improved upon by using a combination of research methods. This is a process known as triangulation and is used by independent analysis of the data by more than one researcher. The writer discusses how qualitative and quantitative research methods apply to research in education. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
