The conflict over smoking has become perhaps the greatest morality play of late 20th-Century America. Whether or not one smokes makes no difference as to the potential for contracting any one of the vile diseases associated with smoking: emphysema, atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and a multitude of cancers, including lung, throat and tongue. To bring the point home, half million a year people die each year from cigarette-related causes, with 37,000 to 40,000 of those dying as a result of secondhand smoke.
