The Cato Institute's Robert Levy says of the entire antitrust suit against Microsoft, 'That dispute revolves around Microsoft's "tie-in" of its browser (Internet Explorer) with its operating system (Windows 95) -- a tie-in that poses no greater threat to competition...than the packaging of tires with automobiles, cream with coffee, laces with shoes, even left gloves with right gloves'. This is a 5 page paper discussing Microsoft’s DirectBand Network and Smart Personal Objects Technology (SPOT). In the fall of 2002, Microsoft introduced their new Smart Personal Objects Technology (SPOT) which rely on data download from their new DirectBand Network. The DirectBand Network utilizes the unused portions of the FM radio bandwidths already essentially established and the SPOT devices such as watches, key chains, and refrigerator magnets to name a few, download up-to-date information such as weather, sports, traffic, news, stock quotes, movies and other options such as personal messages to the user. While the new technology is considered less expensive in its implementation and the devices are also expected to be reasonably priced (and available in the fall of 2003), critics question whether or not these devices will make a substantial impact on a market that already has a great deal of choice in regards to hand held information devices such as cell phones and Pocket PCs.

Microsoft: Threats Of Dominance Of The Personal Computer Software Industry
[ send me this essay ]
10 pages in length. Nothing exemplifies the omnipotent power of American capitalism quite like monopolistic business behavior, and perhaps no other company represents such a stellar example than computer software giant Microsoft. Indeed, the extent to which long-ago computer hacker Bill Gates and his once-upon-a-time insignificant company have grown into the proverbial bottomless pit of power and greed speaks to the very essence of capitalist quest; that he and Microsoft have now reached a pinnacle of ethical business practices indicates how even in a society where such behavior is not only applauded but eagerly sought out, sometimes the envelope of acceptability gets pushed just a bit too far. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
