A 9 page outline of the history of the civil rights movement which would come to be known as the Poor People’s Campaign, a campaign which originated in 1968 under the organization of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and Martin Luther King Jr. The organization stood on the premise of equality for all and is considered by many historians to be the “last effort of the 1960s mass mobilizations of nonviolent resistance”. Considered today to have been only minimally successful, the campaign marked important shifts in the thinking and organization of both the SCLC and Martin Luther King Jr. Although the premises of the Poor People’s Campaign was that it encompassed all people’s it has been stymied in its efforts to effect change in that it is largely associated by mainstream Americans as a solely black movement. The Predominantly White Face of Broadcasting: The Exclusion of Blacks from Broadcasting
[ send me this essay ]
A 10 page observation that the obvious exclusion of blacks from positions of high visibility and high influence in the broadcasting industry relates to the recognition by those in power that black faces would not be accepted into the living rooms across America. This paper analyzes the historic prejudices which have been waged against blacks and suggests that to address the discrimination which is apparent in broadcasting we must address both the intercultural factors and the intracultural factors which are responsible for the ever widening cultural and racial gaps. We must work from the inside of broadcasting to put blacks in influential positions but we must work from the inside of black families to make them realize that they too can be both professional and successful. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

The Problem Of Passing As A Metaphor For The Dynamics Of Responsibility And Coming To Terms With Oneself
[ send me this essay ]
9 pages in length. Being the 'right' race has long been a barometer for how humanity looks at and defines itself. Even in global communities where blacks represent the primary ethnic group, there is nonetheless an intrinsic connotation of inferiority that materializes in the incidence of poverty, overpopulation and lack of education. These symbols of human inadequacy perpetuate in such a cyclical fashion that even when blacks reside alongside whites within otherwise more 'civilized' societies, the identifying mark of inferiority is inescapable. Philip Roth's Human Stain and Charles Johnson's Middle Passage clearly illustrate the extent to which the metaphorical use of 'passing' presents a problem in relation to the dynamics of responsibility and coming to terms with oneself, with the bottom line of each book exemplifying how, the moral choice in choosing one's destiny is comprised of much more than merely what one otherwise wants to do but instead is guided by the principles of social mandate.
