David Walker: Blacks And Whites Are "Natural Enemies"
[ send me this essay ]
5 pages in length. It is nearly impossible to escape racial stereotypes, for they have existed for centuries in all segments of society. One need only look throughout history in order to determine where such damaging stereotypes originated; If one considers the fact that each person is a product of his own environment, it is easy to see that the influence of his surroundings is critical to forming his racial image. Attitudes are spread from generation to generation, community to community and person to person; there is virtually no way to avoid becoming tainted in a society that harbors negative racial stereotypes and embraces Whiteness. When David Walker claimed that blacks and whites are "natural enemies," he was referring to the manner by which the colored race has long been oppressed, controlled and molded by the white race. They point out that while the rights of blacks were adequately addressed by the civil rights movement, their own rights were never sufficiently secured and the measures which were enacted now too often turn into a stumbling block for societal betterment rather than a stepping stone.
