Black Women and their Reactions to Slavery

This paper analyzes the stories related in “Celia, a Slave: A True Story”, “Sojourner Truth : A Life, a Symbol” and “A Black Woman's Civil War Memoirs” to emphasize that some reactions were obviously more effective than others in bringing about positive change. These reactions were shaped not only by the institution of slavery, however, but by the individual circumstances and experiences of individual women and those with whom she interacted.
