Discusses the encomienda system in Central and South America which essentially enslaved the Native Americans of the region and the use of black slaves in the Americas as well. Provides period quotes from Frederick Douglass and Alexis Tocqueville illustrating two different views of black slavery in the Americas. [ send me this essay ]
A 9 page paper discussing opinions surrounding the issue of freedom as it relates to all aspects of life in regards to two separate pieces of work. The Lowell Offering is a book which is a compilation of narratives by the mill working woman. These women were free and worked for a wage. In Frederick Douglass's book he was a slave and later became a free man. There are many similarities and differences but the question that needs to be addressed and answered, based on these two works, is whether or not the institution of slavery was better at taking care of the worker than the industries that offered them jobs.
