Liverpool and Shanghai

Ma Yuan/Artist of the Song Dynasty

The art of Ma Yuan (c. 1155-1225), along with that of Xia Gui, represents the highest level of Chinese painting during the Song dynasty (1127-1279) (Ma Yuan). During the Southern Song period (1127-1279), court painters continued to favor landscapes as subject material, as they had in the past, but they also favored smaller formats and more lyrical treatments (Southern Song).
